Condensate pump - when is it necessary?
What to do if it is not possible to run pipes with a slope and the only option is to go over, for example, a suspended ceiling and access to the sewer riser just above the suspended ceiling? Then it is necessary to use a condensate pump. Its task is to pump the water out of the drip tray, overcome a certain height (between the air conditioner and the space above the suspended ceiling) and further drain the water to the PVC system, which has already been laid with an appropriate slope.
Where are condensate pumps used?
Pumps are usually used in wall-mounted air conditioners (cassette air conditioners already have built-in condensate pumps) and ceiling air coolers. Radiators installed in air conditioning and ventilation units should be equipped with a siphon, which should be used to drain to the sewage system or sewer grate. This is usually not a major problem with AHUs located in specially separated and prepared fan rooms or rooftops (outdoor AHUs mounted directly on the roof of the building), but in the case of suspended versions, often located above the suspended ceiling in offices, it is sometimes necessary to use condensate pumps.
Where to install condensate pumps?
The condensate pumps can be installed in the protective channel (next to the indoor unit of the air conditioner), or simply hidden in the installation or placed on the suspended ceiling. There are many types of condensate pumps with different shapes and capacities. These are usually small devices with dimensions not exceeding 10x10cm and a depth of a few centimeters. They are powered by 230V and consume about 20W of power. Their electrical wires are connected (when draining condensate from the air conditioner) to the power lines of the air conditioner itself. The operating parameters of air conditioner pumps are primarily the maximum lifting height (usually about 8 m), water flow (usually 10 - 18 l/h) and suction height (usually 1-2 m). The pumps are one-piece - a pump and a condensate reservoir with a float in one casing or two-piece, separately a pump and a reservoir with a float, connected by a vinyl pipe. Remember to correctly position the tank with the float, it must be on a level, flat surface - e.g. behind the unit housing or directly on the drip tray.
